Sunrise on the reaping

Author: Suzanne Collins
General Information:
Sunrise on the reaping is the second hunger games prequell with approximately 400 pages. It was released in March 2025 and I would recommen dit for 12 and up.
Content:
It's the fiftieth Hunger games and for the second quarter quell twice as many tributes will be reaped from each district. Haymitch Abernathy, 16 years old, is in love and works hard for his family. When his name is called and he becomes the second male tribute for district 12 he now only thinks about survival but as the second quarter quell begins he realises the odds are not in his favor.
Review:
Haymitch Abernathy is a well known side character from the original Hunger games Trilogy. In Sunrise on the Reaping Haymitch is 16 years old. He doesn't seem like the Haymitch we see in the original books at all. Before the hunger games he is met with many struggles wich shaped his character. You can also really see how he develops and I noticed that he mentioned that he doesn't like to drink but later we see that that changes. The other tributes had a very distinct character. There was the mean girl in town, a oddsmaker and a child close to Haymitch. Throughout the preparations for the games these character develope a lot. They have different perspectives which shape Haymitch. We also see other side characters from the original Trilogy which makes reading so much more fun and kind of nostalgic since you discover aspects about their life and hunger games as well.
I really appreciated that in contrast to the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the other Hunger Games Sequel, this book is a lot quicker plot wise and the pace was a lot faster.
It is built like the first hunger games book so it has the preparations for the games and the games but there are some twists to the plot that are really good and kind of unexpected.
The writing was easier to read than the book before and it was written in the first person which is easier to understand. I also really liked the description when he first went into the arena. The “design” of the arena felt unique but dangerous at the same time.
Buchbuzz Opinion
